Millionaire Bars

Welcome to another favourite Christmas recipe! This one is sometimes called caramel squares as well, so you may have heard it under that name. Whatever you want to call it, it is truly addicting and delicious! With a shortbread crust, caramel filling and chocolate on top, it's literally the best square hands down. In a few easy steps you can serve these at your Christmas celebration!

Main Ingredients

base:

1 cup flour

1/3 cup sugar

2/3 cup butter

 

filling:

1 tin sweetened condensed milk

2/3 cup brown sugar

2 tbsp corn syrup

1 cup butter

 

icing:

1 1/2 cups chocolate chips

 

Preparation

Step 1: Preheat oven to 375F.

Step 2: To make the base layer, soften the butter and blend with sugar and flour. Mixture should be crumbly in texture.

Step 3: Press into greased 9x13 pan and pat with hands or spatula until it is even.

Step 4: Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Set aside to cool.

Step 5: For caramel layer, place 1 tin sweetened condensed milk, brown sugar, butter and corn syrup in a heavy pot over medium heat.

Step 6: Stirring constantly bring mixture to boil. Once it boils stir vigorously and allow to boil for 5 minutes.

Step 7: Remove from heat and let sit for 1 minute.

Step 8:  Gently scrape over base layer.

Step 9:  Place in fridge until cool and firm.

Step 10: Melt chocolate chips in microwave or over double boiler. Spread over cake.

Step 11:  Once chocolate has cooled slice into squares. Can be frozen until ready to serve.
